Consumer Corner: Prepaid Cell Phone Deals

Published by anonymousink at 10:55 am under Consumer Corner Edit This

Everybody has their own preferences with cell phone deals and packages. Perhaps you favor the Verizon network due to their unfailing reliable network… and are willing to pay the outrageous bill associated with being a  Verizon wireless customer.

Perhaps you text more than you talk, and so a phone with a Qwerty keyboard and an unlimited picture, video, and text package is just right for you.

Or, in common cases you are out to get a cool phone for free. This is a trick used to manipulate you into a 2 year contract, in which you are probably going to default on but at the moment… you see a phone you like, for free, end of story.

Well, before I get to my point I must of course mention the business idividuals and tech savvy geeks who can’t live without their smartphone. Be it a Google Android, Blackberry, I-Phone, whatever… (god I wish I could afford one myself) that whole 3G network thing is, well… it’s pretty necessary isn’t it?

Now, to my point. I have been around the bush with cell phone deals, providers, and so on. If you look at my credit report, you will probably see Cingular, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint/Nextel, and T-Mobile. I apologize if I’m missing any. So I’ve clearly been forced into the decision that if I want to be cool and have a cell phone, I have to go with a prepaid.

Here’s my report so far, as I have a few more brands I intend to try within the next year so that I know I am getting the best deal.

Verizon

Just like their monthly plans… what a load of crap! All I can say is that $2 to $3 for every day you use your phone, and then minutes on top of that… do the math. If you can afford it, just get a regular phone!

VirginMobile

This is the newest out of the bunch, just activated yesterday. Now I had meant to go with the prepaid plan, but somehow I changed my mind and went for the $50 monthly plan, with unlimited nights and weekends. With extra money left on my account, I started ordering ringback tones, ring tones, graphics, etc. They seem, so far, like a fun phone service. If I can have Family Guy’s Stewie as a ringback tone for one friend, a rejection hotline recording as a ringback tone for another friend, and Aerosmith as  a rngback tone for another friend… it’s a pretty cool deal I think.

However, check your service area. I will probably be switching phones once this month is over (no contract, no worries) because where I live, I get no service.

Net10

Now this is the phone I gave to my stepdaughter. It cost $30 and came with 300 minutes. It’s 10 cents for everything (I think 5 cents for text), we get great service everywhere on this phone, and so far… it really seems to be the best frikkin deal there is!

Now I do have some promotional codes for those considering Virgin Mobile, comment if you’re interested, but I strongly recommend Net 10 for a prepaid phone.

Still to try is Tracfone, but I don’t see a point in trying them out when nobody else I’ve spoken to has a good word to say about their service or deals.

I have also left out Cricket because they have awful coverage, awful scammy salespeople, and awful customer service. In other words, this little spot right here is the only mention they deserve.
